How do shell and tube heat exchanger work?

Shell and tube heat exchangers are much less expensive than plate type coolers.

In the heat transfer process, one fluid flows through the tubes while the other fluid flows through the shell.

A heat exchanger has two sections: the shell side and the tube side. 

When working with a shell and tube heat exchanger, it is important to decide on which side the hot fluid will enter and on which the cold fluid will enter.
